Squirrels in my Apartment

Squirrels are a constant in this business. They are just so busy and there are some many of them. Couple that with the fact that they like older mature trees that are usually found in older neighborhoods where the homes may be in need of some updating and you get a lot of squirrels in my attic calls. Recently, I have been getting a lot of “squirrels in my apartment” calls. Sometimes I get a phone call from the tenant and sometimes from the landlord.

A couple things that make “squirrels in my apartment” a little bit more difficult that a typical squirrels in my attic call. Sometimes tenants call us and want to hire us. Because we seal up the hole so no more animals can get in we need owner permission before we do any work to a building. Even if you as a tenant are going to be the one paying us please have a conversation with the landlord before setting up service.

If you are calling as a landlord, please get your tenants on board. In a lot of cases we will need access to a unit or attic and it is always helpful if the tenant is aware we are coming. In some cases it might even be wise to give us the tenants number or give them ours and we can set up a time that works for them.

We like to offer a flat rate to solve a problem. I think that is the most fair for the homeowner. It is relatively easy to perform squirrel trapping out of a yard but if you aren’t getting the ones going into the attic your problem isn’t solved but your bill will be high if you are paying per animal. When I say we solve a problem that means we come out, do an inspection, remove offending squirrels, and seal the hole so neighboring squirrels cannot move in.

A couple things to consider when getting a price to remove squirrels from your home is the height at which we have to work to seal the hole and remove the squirrels. We have some tall ladders and also, access to a lift if needed but that does involve more cost. Also, the condition of the building and what it is going to take to seal all the entrance holes that the squirrels are using need to be taken into consideration.

Give us a call at 219-464-7966 in Indiana or 708-320-0004 in Illinois to schedule an inspection to get rid of pests and squirrels in your apartment or building today.

Poison squirrels? No way and here’s why!

I was just looking through the search terms that people googled to find my website and one of them was “how to poison squirrels.” I think that this is such a bad idea that I thought it was worth writing a blog about.  And, the reason why might surprise you.

If you have squirrels in your attic and a squirrel control company poisons them, now you have to find a dead animal because the odor is going to be intolerable. Poison works well for mice. They are relatively small and dry out with no odor when poisoned. Squirrels are just too big. They will start to decompose and create an odor problem long before they completely dry out. Then you have the difficulty of trying to find an animal that isn’t making any sound and oftentimes includes cutting into the walls of your home to find the animal. What if there is more than one? In most cases finding a dead squirrel is going to cost more than trapping a live one.

Ok, so poison is a bad idea. What is the correct way to handle a squirrel nuisance? Trapping. There are basically two kinds of traps; live traps and lethal traps. The live traps can be bought from most of your local hardware or big box and they work well. Peanuts or walnuts with peanut butter will catch them every time.  My preferred method of trapping squirrels is to find where they are entering the home and set a double door trap over the hole and catch them coming or going. Once I have them I seal the hole. Problem solved. It might be hard to find a double door trap at the hardware store. You might have to go to a wildlife control supply company online.

And, for the person who doesn’t want to get on that roof or crawl in that attic or buy traps that they might only use once, Illiana Wildlife Services would be happy to solve your squirrel issue and do squirrel trapping for you. Get rid of squirrels now! We service Lake and Porter County Indian ra and Cook County Illinois.

Flying Squirrels in Merrillville

2014 is over, and now we have 2015 ahead of us. In January 2015, we got a call from a house in Merrillville. The owner wanted to hire our services to catch some flying squirrels from his attic. We did just that.

After trapping the squirrels, we took them to a licensed rehabber. He will release them at the right time. Since it is very cold in January, removing the squirrels from their warm, comfy stashes of nuts and releasing them into the woods was not a good idea. There is a good chance that they would die of cold. So, we decided to hand them over to the rehabber.

Apart from the squirrels, we also trapped and removed a raccoon from the attic of a house located in Calumet City IL. After our experts removed the raccoons successfully, the owner visited his insurance company to file a claim for the damage caused to his attic by the raccoons. The raccoons tore holes in the roof of his house in a couple of days in addition to damaging the insulation paper.

Hopefully, 2014 is going to be a really busy year for us. So, if you have some squirrel trapping and wildlife control/removal job for us, please give us a call at 219-464-7966. We will be over the moon to help you.
